Chapter 7: Imitation and the Evolution of Culture

 

The past 2000 years has seen a succession of shifts of balance between the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere, but in the contemporary world this shift has swung too far towards the left hemisphere. In this second part of the book, McGilchrist considers what these shifts reveal within the frame of The Master and his Emissary metaphor. He recognises the limitations of how far he can go with this exploration. He also states that he will focus on Western culture, although he believes that there are some parallels between Western and Eastern cultures, but also that the balance has been better maintained over the years in Eastern cultures. He notes that science, capitalism and bureaucracy have taken hold in the West, in a way not seen in the East.
